Unquera to Potes

The room at the B&B was pitch black in the night. Not a speck of light in the room. Not something we get in Ivinghoe! Breakfast was like round 2 of last nights dinner - a table heaving with food and most of it laden with gluten, so not much help from Sally. More chorizo. A lot of stuff that tasted like bread and butter pudding - very nice. Best of all was the Spanish omelette. The bill was amazing, only €46 for dinner, bed and breakfast for 2 people. Incredible. She gave me 2 oranges for our journey and a rose for Sally to attach to her bike.

The weather forecast was for solid rain all day and so we got into full waterproofs for the ride. The first 10Km to Panes was on a minor road and it was what we call undulating - sometimes very undulating but very beautiful.

Panes was holding a livestock market and cows were being herded along the main street. We stopped for coffee and watched 2 herds being driven to the field where the market was being held. All the cows had bells around their necks and the herds men called out to the old men at the cafe.

After coffee we headed south toward the mountains, following the Rio Deva into the deep gorge. The gradient of the road was gentle, mostly no more than 1% and the river mostly slow flowing. Occasionally it sped up and the road gradient also increased, but never much above 5 or 6%. Had one stop on the way to Potes and arrived around 2:30. Apartments are OK - clean and comfortable. No hot water until we complained but otherwise great. The village/small town is very quaint with old buildings and bridges along cobbled roads. Yes, we even did some tourism!

  1. Looks like a bit of a rest day, compared with the first day. Food looks overwhelmingly plentiful.Love the cows, where else could you have a coffee while a herd of cows thunder past.
